An average return of 19.5% for the S&P 500 in 2024

Between November and December 2023, we witnessed an extraordinary performance from the S&P500, accumulating impressive gains that surpassed the 10% mark. This remarkable performance not only reflects the market's resilience but also suggests an optimistic outlook for the coming year.

Analyzing the trend over the decades, dating back to the 1950s, we observe that periods of sharp growth at the end of a year often signal a positive continuation in the following year. In six previous instances where the S&P500 closed the year with significant gains, the first part of the subsequent year also showed very promising results.

More specifically, when examining the performance in the first three months of the following year, we find that the S&P500 was positive in all six previous instances, with an impressive average gain reaching 6.6%. This pattern suggests a consistent trend of growth in the early stages of the following year, reinforcing investor confidence.

Expanding the analysis to the entire following year, historical data reveals an equally encouraging scenario. In the six previous instances where the S&P500 recorded notable gains at the close of the first quarter, the performance over the entire year remained positive, presenting a significant average return of 19.5%. This consistency throughout the year reinforces the idea that the initial positive momentum tends to consolidate, providing investors with a solid foundation for anticipating favorable results.

Therefore, based on these historical analyses and the robust recent performance of the S&P500, indicators suggest a promising horizon for investors, emphasizing the importance of a strategic and vigilant approach in the face of opportunities that may unfold over the next year.
